A Nature-Based Approach to Health

Park RX America, Active People Health Georgia, DeKalb County Board of Health

Why This Project Mattered

DeKalb County Board of Health partnered with Park Rx America and Active People, Healthy Nation to bring the Park Prescription program to local communities. The goal: encourage providers to “prescribe” time outdoors as a simple, accessible way to improve health.

Our challenge was to design a resource that could reach a wide audience—especially those new to park-based wellness—while reflecting DeKalb County’s commitment to equity and prevention.

This suite of materials went on to win an American Design Award and is now available as a national template in the CDC’s resource library.

Approach and Delivery

We developed the full visual identity for Park Rx DeKalb—from the logo and branding to a full suite of communication materials. The goal was to create a welcoming, nature-forward look that reflected the joy and accessibility of outdoor health.

Every piece was designed to work together, helping providers, families, and community partners engage with the program easily and confidently.

Promotional Materials to Spark Engagement

Flyers and handouts helped spread the word across neighborhoods, clinics, and local events. These print-ready assets introduced the program and invited families to join a growing movement for nature-based health.

Park Materials for Events and Social Media

We built a flexible set of tools that promoted Park Rx Day across platforms—social posts, event signage, and location-specific info cards. Each piece helped reinforce the connection between outdoor activity and wellness.

Infographics for Kids and Families

To reach younger audiences, we designed playful, easy-to-understand visuals showing how kids can explore parks and stay active. These were shared both in schools and at family health events.

Signage That Guides and Informs

Wayfinding and promotional signs supported on-site programs and guided attendees through community park events, reinforcing the initiative’s presence and purpose.

Tailored Materials for COVID-Safe Outreach

We adapted the campaign for use during the COVID-19 pandemic with tools that emphasized safety while still encouraging outdoor activity—ensuring the program stayed relevant and responsive.

Reflections

The refresh focused on accessibility, clarity, and inclusivity, ensuring all materials are readable, visually cohesive, and reflective of diverse communities.
