Mapping CBO Capacity in Maternal Health

National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities

Why This Project Mattered

Community-based organizations (CBOs) are key partners in improving maternal health outcomes. This project helped the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) understand the landscape of maternal health support networks and identify opportunities to strengthen resources across communities.

By mapping existing capacity and needs, the report created a foundation for more equitable collaboration with local organizations working to advance maternal and child health.

Approach and Delivery

We began by identifying common goals and barriers across CBOs through interviews, research, and data visualization. The resulting framework highlights how state, local, and national programs intersect—and where stronger connections could drive better maternal health outcomes.

Streamlined Navigation for Practical Use

We designed a section-based navigation system that makes the report easier to explore by audience. Local, state, and national personnel can access insights specific to their role, allowing each reader to find relevant data quickly and confidently.

Inclusive and Authentic Imagery

Photography throughout the report reflects the real people and families served by these programs. Images were chosen intentionally to honor diversity and strengthen connection with the communities most affected by maternal health disparities.

Policy Adaptation Across Counties

A custom data visualization shows how maternal health policies vary by region and how national strategies translate into local practice. This snapshot helps stakeholders understand regional differences and identify areas where resources and outreach can be most effective.

Localized Visuals

Localized graphics tie findings to specific communities, making the information both personal and actionable. By highlighting regional case studies, the report helps audiences see the tangible impact of maternal health initiatives in their area.

Data Visualization

Individual graphics highlight essential metrics—such as county, state, and national birth rates—using accessible hierarchy and plain-language labeling.

Infographics

These data points are expanded into full-page visuals that connect metrics to broader systems and outcomes. Each infographic combines color, structure, and annotation to illustrate how local conditions reflect national trends.

Reflections

By blending design strategy with public health communication, this project made complex information easier to understand and act on. The redesigned tools help NCBDDD strengthen collaborations and promote more inclusive, data-informed maternal health strategies nationwide.
